Tucumcari, NM. an old Rt. 66 Town ...still here...

July 24, Continuing on down Rt. 66 we have to get on Rt. 40 east because the old highway disappears. We arrive at Tucumcari where the old 66 starts again thru town.
Right off the highway for about 2 miles all the motels and gas stations are boarded up and closed, I thought this town was Gone? then after a few blocks we see the old town still there. The interstate has ruined a lot of small businesses because of New Hotels and gas stations built right off the exit and no one goes thru town anymore.
There are still some well preserved old motels here but not a lot of people staying in them. Why pay $39.00 for and old motel when the new one are advertising the same price too.
The campground we are in had maybe 75 sites but only 7 RV’s here. It is clean and has all the hookups and was a Passport America Park. Only $18.95/nite with all the hookups. We settled in and unhooked to drive around town to see the sights, lots of Murals adorn the walls of many buildings. We see the night Neon Lights come on at the motels , so of them are so cool not like the Boxy signs at the new Hotels..
