Badlands, SD.

June 24, Tuesday, We arrived at the Badlands National Park today. We stayed outside the park at Circle 10 Campground. There were very few campers here. We were told to stay here because they were black topping the in the park campground. We are here for 3 days to enjoy the park and area. The colors on the rocks were so beautiful mostly at sunset. I even went over on Thursday  at 8 am to see the morning sunshine. Every turn thru the park had many shapes and colors to see. We stopped at Visitors center to catch a 20 minute film about the park.
On Wednesday night a thunder storm came thru and the campground in the park was pounded very hard. Some tenters lost their tents due to the high winds, and went to local motels for the night.
We saw even some prairie dog in action in a lot nearby. The store sold peanuts to feed them. It was fun to see people interact with them. The funniest was a little kid trying to feed them. See the pictures ...

1880 Old West Town

June  24, Tuesday, Heading west on Rt 90 we stop at exit 170 at an Old West Town called 1880 Town. We stopped here 5 years ago and had a good time. This is an old village of different buildings from the west. At the Hotel/saloon you can  rent a complete outfit , cowboy or cowgirl for $5.00 and then walk around town taking pictures of your self in western clothes. There was a group here from Italy that all dressed up and had a ball taking pictures. You can see from my pictures what you can see here ....  https://picasaweb.google.com/AirstreamHobo/1880OldWestTown02#

A Historical Indian Village Museum

June 23, while driving around Mitchell, SD. I saw a sign for an Indian Village Dig Memorial. I decided to investigate and followed the signs. The Indian Village museum was also an argeologist  dig. The admission fee was $ 5.00 and well worth the education and visual tour that I got. There was a class going on while I was there and I could see them at work. This is a long and tedious job to preserve their findings. Everything is cataloged and measured as they discover the different finds. Here are some pictures .. https://picasaweb.google.com/AirstreamHobo/ArchaeologyDig#

Made in America !!!!

On Monday, June 23, while in Mitchell, SD. I found a Western Wagon shop about 8 miles away. I drove over to see them. I was allowed to roam the facility and take pictures. You will see by the pictures that this is a Superior Wagon Master Shop. There was a warehouse filled with finished and ready to restore wagons in storage. I also was introduced to a man that was completing the Gold Leafing on a custom stage coach. We had interesting conversations on the process of this job. Here are pictures of my tour of this Americana Place of “Made in America”     https://picasaweb.google.com/AirstreamHobo/HansenWheelWagonShop#

First Week heading West....

June 17th, This 1st week has been busy. We have traveled across the USA on Rt. 70 driving about 200 miles each day. We found Passport Parks everywhere. Each day about 3 pm we would plan our touch down for the night. Some times we would look for a State Park too if it was close to where we were.
We did stop at Finger Lakes State Park in Missouri got a site for $19.00 with electric. The camp had a Motor cross track and many trails for 4 wheelers. It was fun to watch them race around the track in practice. There is a $5.00 charge each day for each bike/4 wheeler to use the park. We went out for breakfast to a little café nearby for a great breakfast. The café was just a little building with dining and a kitchen. One waitress handled it all.
Off to the road again, we found a family from our hometown that moved to Iowa and looked them up. We were only an hour away when we called. It was nice to see Chuck,Liz, and the girls again. We stayed the night in their front yard, they gave us electric from the house. They had a spaghetti dinner for us to share and also gave us a tour of their little town afterwards. We stayed the night and left in the am at 9. Bye Bye Girls.. Chuck was already at work.
We headed up Rt. 29 thru Iowa, after 200 miles we began looking, stopping 3 times to find a reasonable priced camp. While driving thru Onawa I saw a sign for Fairgrounds.. out west little town have town parks for camping. I followed the street to the fair grounds and found it filled with Airstreams. We ran into Region 8 Vintage Club having a Rally here. They invited us to join them. Scott Allen led us to park and gave us all the info for the weekend. Pot luck tonight with plenty of food. Saturday had an Open House of the Airstreams from 9-11 am.
There was a street rod show downtown with a parade at 8 pm. They all parked together on Main St.  for an Aerial Photo Shot. Everyone from miles around brought their cars to show, some were pristine others came as they were everyday drivers.  Saturday night we had an out door movie with popcorn. During the night we had terrific rain & wind storms, No Fire Siren was heard, thank God ! We packed up to leave at 10 am and got stuck in the wet grass. One of the members ‘Scott J.’’ pulled me 5 feet to the gravel road and off we went.
Drove up Rt 29 to Rt 90 West in South Dakota to Mitchell  for the night, well 2 nights. Passport America only $17/ nite. That’s all for now, see you later...see pictures...   https://picasaweb.google.com/AirstreamHobo/OutWest1StWeek2014

Camping in Gettysburg,Pa.

April 27, We left Compton Bassett for Gettysburg,Pa. Some how we got lost and ended up in Virginia. I found Rt 15 north and headed that way. We decided to stop at Gettysburg Farm Thousand Trails outside of East Berlin. This was a down on the farm campground. We parked in the first row behind the barn, what a view of the countryside. Farm animals everywhere, some in fences ,others roaming free. The Tom Turkey owned the grounds, he was everywhere watching the hen turkey. He even attacks when you are too close.
We paid for 5 days (Only $3.00 a night x 5 = 15.00) Full hookups too. One day it rained all day and flooded the creek row of campsites. The campground across the street became an island and their campers were stranded for a day.
On Friday May 2, we moved to Biglerville about 15 miles away. We set up in the community park with our unit for our first rally of the year. Only 5 units arrived but we had a great time. I drove into town to see the old General store and walk around the town. I also saw the library which was built by the owners of the store as a gift to the community. There were antique sleds on the wall on display, see pictures.
On Saturday night we had potluck and I made Chicken/corn/noodle soup in a Dutch Oven to share. I also made an Apple Spice dessert in another Dutch Oven at the same time, Mmm.. Good if I do say myself.
On Sunday May 4th we hooked up and left the park and went down the road to watch the York area Make a Wish have their annual Truck convoy. It was fun to watch them go by and wave.On Saturday, there was a Motorcycle rally also for Make a Wish. Over one hundred motorcycles in the run. Here are some pictures of the week, enjoy... https://picasaweb.google.com/AirstreamHobo/GettysburgFarmThousandTrailsEastBerlinPa#
